1  Place Frederic Mistral

Mons is perhaps the most picturesque and unspoilt village of the Haut Var. Perched on an outcrop of rock, the views from the main square extend over the hills to the sea and, on a clear day, to the snow-capped mountains of Corsica.

Situated at 815 metres (2700 ft.), between the Cote d’Azure and the Alps, it is an ideal spot for exploring the best of Provence.

From here, Nice, Cannes, St Tropez are within easy reach; as are the mountain passes of the southern Alps and the spectacular Gorges du Verdon. Mons is an ideal centre for walking, cycling, touring, horse riding or for spending quiet, contemplative days in the rural heart of the Haut Var.

Just 20 minutes away is Europe’s premium centre for gliding and, very recently, two superb golf courses have been built around a magnificent Four Seasons Hotel. Daily green fees are available.

In the very centre of Mons, standing on the village square with its old plane tree and pretty fountain, is the most distinguished house of the village; address, 1 Place Frederic Mistral. This old “Maison de Seigneur” was built in the 17th century when the Seigneur’s Chateau was destroyed by the villagers during the religious wars. At the time it had a Renaissance aspect but the exterior and the windows were changed in the 19th century. It still shows the influence of the Italians who were introduced to Mons in the 15th century to repopulate the village that had been ravaged by the plague. The house has now been refurbished and converted into six apartments for discerning visitors.

The house has been redesigned by French architect, Henri Guydan, (with offices in Mons, Paris and Tokyo) and by Dutch designer, Arja Suddens. Great care has been taken to retain all of the architectural features of Provence. The apartments are spacious and elegant, each with its own character. The house can be rented in its entirety or the apartments can be rented singly or in pairs.

Each apartment features a bedroom with double or adjoining twin beds, a living room (some with a convertible sofa for extra guests), a bathroom with shower or bath and a fully equipped kitchen. Modern furniture blends in with antiques.

A special conference room is available for meetings or events.
